Every person deserves the right to make their own choices and live by their own values. They deserve to define their own life. Yet manipulation, whether emotional, financial, or psychological, steals that right. It’s not always loud or violent. Sometimes, it hides behind guilt trips, gaslighting, and conditional love.
But whatever the form, manipulation is control, and no one has the right to control your life.
Evelyn Lauda’s The Place I Am Meant to Be shows how manipulation can slowly shape someone’s world until they hardly recognize themselves. Through her story, we learn why reclaiming control is essential.
Manipulation isn’t always obvious. It can sound like:
- “You’ll never survive without me.”
- “I know what’s best for you.”
- “After all I’ve done for you, you owe me.”
It creates confusion and self-doubt. Over time, you may start to believe that your feelings, choices, or dreams don’t matter. That is precisely what manipulators aim to do in order to wear you down and take control of your life.
Manipulation isolates you from support systems, makes you second-guess yourself, and keeps you trapped in fear. People who are manipulated often give up their goals, lose contact with friends, and stop trusting their instincts.
As Evelyn writes, “The more I did, the more he gave me another point to harass.” That is why reclaiming your voice is necessary.
The first step to freedom is recognizing that you deserve to make your own decisions. No one gets to choose your career, your appearance, or your relationships for you. If someone is trying to control these things, it’s not love. Know that it is manipulation.
Start by identifying your values. Ask yourself, What matters to you? What do you want in life? Then, take small steps to move toward those values, whether that means setting boundaries, seeking therapy, or confiding in a trusted friend.
Breaking free from manipulation requires support. Whether it’s a coach, a therapist, a family member, or a support group, surround yourself with people who respect your autonomy and encourage your growth.
“No” is a complete sentence. It’s also a powerful shield against manipulation. Learning to say no without guilt is one of the most empowering things you can do to restrict any manipulator from crossing the line. So, whenever possible, say no to defend yourself and show them that you also have a voice.
In the end, you are the author of your story. You have the right to change direction, set boundaries, and choose what comes next. No one else should hold the pen. As Evelyn Lauda showed us, taking back control isn’t easy, but it’s always worth it. You deserve a life that is fully, completely, unapologetically your own.
And you can craft it now by having faith and conviction in yourself.
