One of the novel’s most intriguing qualities is its connection to Deborah Wales’s own experiences. Wales explains that the Hall was inspired by an actual historic house she explored during childhood. The family itself is fictional, but the mysterious pendant that helped inspire the story is real an unusual piece Wales discovered in a charity shop, whose origins remain unknown.
