A Wake-Up Call for All Citizens

B Temp

Chadwick Smith’s Cherokee Nation Proceed Undaunted is a wake-up call. As a Cherokee citizen and someone interested in tribal politics, I found this book both inspiring and deeply concerning.

Smith lays out, in detail, how the Cherokee Nation has built and rebuilt itself over two centuries, often in the face of incredible adversity. He shows how the Cherokee Constitution has been a central part of that survival. From its first draft in 1827 to major changes in 1999 and beyond. Smith’s sharp analysis of recent political decisions, like unconstitutional pay raises, denial of free speech, and judicial manipulation, reveals how internal threats now pose as much danger to Cherokee sovereignty as any outside force.

What struck me most was how personal this book feels. Smith doesn’t hide behind formal language. He writes as someone who has lived through these challenges and still believes the Cherokee people can reclaim what’s been lost. His stories of firekeepers and principled leaders reminded me that Cherokee identity is rooted not in blood alone, but in responsibility and service.

This book offers legal and historical commentary on the core values and constitutions that have guided the Cherokee people toward a “designed purpose.” Anyone who lives in a constitutional democracy can benefit from reading it because it’s an essential text, particularly during periods of declining confidence in the leadership and government.
