After 250 Years, no Longer Independent nor Free

B Temp

July the 4th of 2026 was a decidedly mixed blessing. Yes, it was a reminder of that wonderful declaration of our independence from Great Britain a quarter of a millennium ago. But sadly, when we compare America’s current situation with the words of that Declaration, our country is no longer truly independent. Neither, for that matter, are we truly free. The rights demanded by that Declaration are no longer assured, and all too often outright violated. Further, our democratic ideals are desecrated by all three branches of our Federal Government.

Our country’s most openly apparent problem is that we are being misled by Donald J. Trump, a deeply demented, highly corrupt, autocratic, greedy, and egomaniacal criminal who seems intent on destroying this country as it was declared to exist. As bad as this problem is, what is even worse is that it is also a symptom of a problem that is far greater and more complex than having a deviant president. That complex problem has three troubling elements:

  • First, our government’s makeup is so flawed that a demented being like Trump could even be a legitimate candidate for a high government office. Those governmental flaws extend to allowing control by conservative Republicans who act in opposition to our country’s founding principles. These governmental flaws have their roots in our Constitution.
  • Second, far too many of our voters seem to be properly guided. Many do not even vote. Of those who vote, all too many show their lack of understanding in our country’s principles, voting for the likes of Trump and conservative Republicans, who openly oppose those principles. At the core of this issue is that most of these misguided citizens simply have not been properly taught about American principles and how these are to be achieved.
  • And third, we lack a clear alternative to conservative Republicans. Moderate and liberal Democrats seen to be somewhat properly guided, in line with our founding principles of equality, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, assured by a democratic government. However, the Democrats seen to lack the strength and resolve to accomplish their mission. Further, they do not seem to be sufficiently in touch with the “red” districts across the country to understand their needs and convince them that they will care for them. Democrats need to get their act together.

At the present time, we are neither free nor independent. Only when we correct these complex problems can we once again declare our country to be moving toward being truly free and independent. We need someone like FDR to take full charge and get us on a proper path forward.
