From a shotgun shack on the “Colored Side of Town” in Hickory, Mississippi to the boardrooms of corporate success, Alvin T. Johnson’s memoir is a powerful journey through poverty, hard times, sad times, love, legacy, and triumph. This is not just the story of a self-made millionaire—it’s the story of a son, a father, a husband, and a Black man navigating the fault lines of America with grit and determination. After losing his father at just six years old, Alvin watched his mother make the difficult decision to leave everything behind and move the family north to Chicago in search of safety and opportunity. There, Alvin grew up in some of the toughest neighborhoods on the South Side. At 16, he and his family lived in the infamous Cabrini Green Projects—an area marked by poverty, gangs, drugs, and violence. Alvin worked countless jobs and learned many skills: picking cotton, selling wood, delivering newspapers, and even collecting samples from sewage treatment plants. He also became one of the first African Americans to work with large-scale computer systems. His government career began as an intern and eventually led to his role as Director of the Management Services Office at the Army Research Laboratory at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Before that, he served honorably in the U.S. Army. After retiring at just 39, Alvin earned a BLS degree from the University of Oklahoma and founded a successful IT and engineering firm—ultimately becoming a millionaire. His journey spans writing checks that bounced to serving as Director of the Federal Reserve Bank, El Paso Branch. Behind the business success are deeply human moments. Each chapter is filled with emotion, hope, and healing. From a Shack to the Plaza was completed in honor of Alvin’s mother and the unfinished manuscript she began. More than a memoir, it is a moving tribute to family, perseverance, and purpose. Alvin’s story reminds us that success isn’t just about what you earn—it’s about what you give, how you rise from failure, and how you lift others as you climb.
